Description of game

Now, Mortal Kombat is one of the genre classics, a legend. It migh be hard, it might be tough to master, but it revolutionized the fighting games and set pretty much all the key features for all the upcoming games in the Mortal Kombat series. First of all, Mortal Kombat presented a system of previously unthinkable combos. These are hard to master but somewhat add to the gameplay value, as you really have to know your characters to fully utilize their in-game potential. Then there is the gore aspect of the thing: fatalities, or—in other words—especially cruel ways how to finish your opponent, were something that—along with the use of digitized graphics—got the attention of the wider society (mainly parents and politicians), and ultimately led to the birth of ESRB, or Entertainment Software Rating Board. Shortly put, the digitized graphics means that the game uses photographs of live action actors shot against the green-screen, instead of hand-drawn character sprites. Yes, folks. There are actual people fighting on your screen in Mortal Kombat! And that has to count for something, I guess. I know there isn't many people now (especially post-millenial kiddos spoiled by all the 3D graphics don't like it) who would like to see more of this done with the modern technology that's available now, but I'm a huge fan of digitized graphics. It's technical aspect is complicated, it certainly takes more time than creating a photorealistic 3D; yet the outcome can look surprisingly good when done right. But that isn't all, at the time of its release, Mortal Kombat was a unique game even controls-wise. It presented a layout comprising of an 8-way joystick and five buttons organized into a diagonal cross pattern (think of the ‘5' side of a six-sided die). On the left side of the cross, you have two buttons for low-punch and high-punch; on the right are two buttons for low-kick and high-kick. In the center of the cross is then the fifth button, which is used for blocking. Unlike in Street Fighter games, in Mortal Kombat there is no concept of ‘combat points' that would enable you to perform certain moves only once a certain ammount of points is amassed, all the moves a character can perform can be performed at any time without limitations. Now, the game allows both singleplayer and multiplayer mode. In multiplayer mode—obviously—two players play against each other. In the singleplayer mode a single player battles a series of randomly ordered computer opponents, in the eponymous Mortal Kombat tournament. First bunch of matches is 1v1, but later on the game steps-up and sends you into 1v2 battles, until you eventually confront your main opponent, Shang Tsung. The game contains thirteen characters in total: six available from the start and six unlockable ones, each represented by an actual actor. Now isn't that cool? It certainly is! So whatcha waiting for? Grab that gamepad and finish him!!!
